As christmas draws close, alot of evils and security challenges are springing up as a result of self survival and sustainability. It was reported that a driver who diverted clothes worth N5.2m and sold them for 100K, has been arrested by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad, FSARS, Lagos just because he needs money for christmas to travel to Dubai.
This should engage the attention of all even in this festive season. Christmas, of course, has come to be associated with festivities, reunions, the celebration of family and friendship, with the exchange of greetings, visits and gifts. For Nigerians, however, this year’s Christmas is bringing to a close, a year of forlorn hopes and shattered expectations. The majority of the nation’s people have been struggling to cope with meeting daily needs in order top survive and fighting bad governance at all levels that has not brought them any relief, but greater agony occasioned by worsening economic situation, decaying social infrastructure and even more widespread social insecurity. The pang of hikein the price of fuel, high cost of food, clothing and the deadly act by the Boko haram sect is currently biting all over the country and the mood is dark in Nigeria today.
The suspect identified as Gabriel Onyeka from Abia State, who was given the goods by one Alhaji Dabuzu at New Park in Kano State to deliver to his customer in Aba, Abia State as a transport agent, diverted the clothes worth N5.2m and reportedly took it down to Ebute Ero Market at Idumota, Lagos to sell.
The suspect’s arrest came after he approached a trader to buy the goods for N500,000. However after the trader offered to pay the sum of N100,000 for the goods which he agreed, the trader sent a tip off to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP in charge of FSARS on Lagos Island, Mr Ibrahim Kaoje after he suspected it was stolen goods.
The driver who diverted the clothes worth N5.2m, reportedly confessed to the crime after he was taken down to the police station. According to him, he diverted the goods to sell to enable him raise money to travel to Dubai, United Arab Emirate.The police said that the suspect would be charge to court after investigation of the matter.
